Van Slam Qualifies for NPS 2008
Last night, on October 22nd, the Vancouver Slam Poetry Team traveled to Bellingham, Washington to participate in a ‘Win-2′ bout. This is part of the new system that Poetry Slam Incorporated started to determine which cities go to the annual National Poetry Slam. The other competitors in the bout were slam teams from Spokane, Boise, and Seattle. Vancouver needed to finish first, or second to assure next year’s team a spot in the 2008 National Poetry Slam, being held in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Van Slam team had a combined score of 110.4 out of a possible 120, meaning that their average score from each judge was 9.2! This was enough to fend off great performances from Seattle, which finished second with a 107.8. Seattle also qualifies for NPS. Boise and Spokane (who were also awesome) will gain an early spot on the wait list for NPS, and still have a shot at getting in.
The highest individual scores of the night were Zaccheus Jackson with a 28.4 and Sean McGarragle (filling in for Scruffmouth who is in Kenya) with a 28.3. Nora and Fernando also scored very high… obviously. I mean, their average score as a team was 9.2! Vancouver should feel well-represented by this fantastic grouping of talent.
