So! a new qualifying season is underway to determine which 5 poets will have a chance to become the next Vancouver Poetry Slam Team.

It's crucial to understand that this year's season has a brand new qualifying system, one completely different from previous years. It is a points system. You can read about how it works here:
http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com/forum/smf/index.php/topic,792.msg2654.html

The points system should become clear very quickly as the season progresses and we start posting results. With that in mind, here are the results from the first qualifying slam.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

It was interesting to see so many new faces at this opening season slam.  Only a few of the vets decided to go for it which is different than in the past.  That might have something to do with the new system as well.

It should prove interesting regardless.  Thanks for keeping track of it Chris.

Webmaster's Note: Scores for each slam may take a few extra days, or even weeks to be posted, now that I don't live in the same house as our Slammaster. But I promise we'll get them online as soon as we can.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

7 December 2009

Sac: The Svelte Ms. Spelt [7:20 -12.5] 13.4
Lisa Slater (1) 23.8
I Am Woe (2) 24.2
Sean McGarragle (3) [3:39 - 1.5] 24.9 + (2) 27 = 51.9 Fifth!
Fernando Raguero (4) 27.6 + (5) 28.3 = 55.9 First! (16 points)
Tyler (5) 21.5
Steve Miller (6) 25.8 +(4) 26.6 = 52.4 Fourth! (1 point)
Pablo Nunoz (7) 23.9
Julie Peters (8 ) 27.2 + (3) 27.2 = 54.4 Third! (4 points)
Bolko (9) [4:03 - 3.0] 23.1
Steve Locke (10) 23.6
Sonja Littlejohn (11) 24.6
Duncan Shields (12) 26.3 + (1) 28.8 = 55.1 Second! (9 points)

There are only FIVE qualifying slams remaining for the team playoffs. They will be held (at Café Deux Soleils, 2096 Commercial Drive) on: December 21st, January 4th, February 1st, February 15th, March 1st. March 15th is the Last Chance Slam.

There are only TWO qualifying slams remaining to qualify for Vancouver's WOWps Grand Slam. There will be held on December 21st and January 4th. The Grand Slam is on January 11th.

Are there not two qualifiers in January?  Jan 4 and 11?  I know the 18th is the Nerd Slam but is the 11th still open?  No, wait that's the WOW Playoff isn't it?  Never mind.

Yep, exactly. WOWps play-off on January 11th, so there's only one qualifying slam in January.
