Women of the World Poetry Slam: Qualifying Rules & Standings
« on: October 03, 2008, 11:43:59 PM »
Vancouver Poetry Slam will be sending a representative to the second annual Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) in Detroit, Michigan in March 18-21 2009. Check out – http://www.wow.poetryslam.com/ – for more details.

The Vancouver play-offs will be run as the same format as the Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS) play-offs in that you'll be asked to have 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute and 4 minute poems ready to compete with. There will be a 4-minute round, then a 2 minute round, then a 1 minute round, with no grace period for time in any of those rounds. If there is a tie, the tiebreaker round will be a three minute round.

The basic guidelines for participation in WOWps Vancouver play-offs is that if you live your life as a woman, and you consider yourself a woman then you are eligible. All competitors should be at least 18 years of age.

WOWps playoffs will be held on January 5, 2009 at Cafe Deux Soleils. The top 8 female poets will be allowed to compete.

We will be using a points system to qualify poets to compete.  You get points for every poet you beat at a Vancouver Poetry Slam between Sept 1st and December 29th regardless of their gender.  You get 1 point no matter what if you decide to be the sacrificial poet at the Van Slam.  You get 1 point no matter what just for participating.  Alt slams and youth slams don't count for points. The more you compete, the more points you get and the better chance you have of being one of the top 8. The results from the IWPS play-offs do not count toward WOWps rankings, just as they did not count toward the Van Slam team play-offs qualifying either.

Participating this way does not alter your chances in making the Van Slam Playoffs in April and May.  The same system of rankings and scores that we have used for that event will be used for again this season.

If you have any questions, please contact one of your slammasters. You can reach Sean McGarragle at 604-818-5796 or by email at mcgarragle@gmail.com. You can reach Lisa Slater at 604-764-6611 or by email at juicyimperfection@hotmail.com.

Thanks Chris.

Where will the rankings over the season be posted?  On the forum, on the website?  Both, neither?

The standings for all PSI-related play-off events in Vancouver (ie, IWPS, NPS team, WOWps) will be posted here under "Van Slam" in the VPH Forum. I will try to update the main website occasionally, but this is where you'll find the most recent information. I am coordinating closely with our slammasters so that scores and updated standings as soon as possible after each qualifying poetry slam.

Just wondering about the standings.

Shouldn't Lisa actually have 12 points?  11 points for finishing 1st a week ago plus 1 point for just competing?

Good point, RC. I've consulted our slammasters about this as well, and they agree. The new standings have participation points included, as well as the results from the Oct 6th bout. Here they are:

1. Lisa Slater – 20 points
2. Sasha Langford – 14 points
3. Lucia – 11 points
4. Farrida – 10 points
5. Shannon Rayne – 7 points
6. Geraline Webster – 5 points
7. Kelda Larson – 3 points
8. Jenny – 3 points

The top 8 poets will qualify for the WOWps play-offs on January 5th, 2009.

I have advised Sean and Lisa that I will decline a spot in the playoffs if I am still in the top 8 by playoff time. So if you're keeping track, imagine an imaginary space made by me stepping out of the lineup.

Go Women of the World!

For the playoffs in Vancouver, can someone please confirm for me that the evening will actually start with the 4 minute round.

Last year we opened up the evening with a one minute round.

My understanding, Shannon, is that the format will be exactly the same as for the IWPS playoffs: a 4 minute round, a feature poet, a break, then a 2 minute round, then a 1 minute round. However, this is something that you should confirm with one of our slammasters.
