A new qualifying season is underway to determine which 5 poets will have a chance to become the next Vancouver Poetry Slam Team.

It's crucial to understand the points system. This is the third year that we're using it.

You can read about how it works for qualifying for Team Playoffs here:
http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com/forum/smf/index.php/topic,1718.0.html

And about how it works for qualifying for WOWPS Playoffs here:
http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com/forum/smf/index.php/topic,1719.0.html

The points system should become clear very quickly as the season progresses and we start posting results. With that in mind, here are the results from the first qualifying slam.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

After some discussion with the rules committee and the current slam masters, it's been decided that we raise the slam cap to 8 slams this season seeing as it looks like we'll be having 18 point-scoring slams.  We are a few 'alt slams' short so as a result, we have more slams going towards picking poets for semi-finals.

There are a handful of poets at or near the current cap so it doesn't affect too many people but we think it's the right thing to do.

The old cap of 6 was created when we had 14 slams.  Just under half.  So if we've got 18 slams, upping the cap to 8 seems like the right thing to do.

If there are any objections, let me know.

Makes sense.

And I don't think there's been many (or any??) times when more than 12 poets tried to sign up this season, so it's not as though allowing the regulars to slam more will be taking away opportunities from up-and-comers.

No we are not done with alt slams on a monthly basis.  Sean's told me that no one's stepped up to organize any 'alt' slams before the festival and as such, more regular qualifying slams are slotted in to take their place.

Also, it should be noted that since this year will contain 18 point-scoring slams going towards semi-finals, the cap on how many times a poet may slam for this season has been raised to 8.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

Tonight was our Last Chance Slam.  The winner of tonight's slam joins the rest of the high scorers in the semi-finals.

Congratulations to Sonya Littlejohn!  She was the winner after two rounds with a score of 53.2.

She will join the other poets in the semi-finals coming on April the 2nd and April the 16th at Cafe Deux Soleils.

It was just the winner that makes it through?  No points for second or third and so on?
