So! a new qualifying season is underway to determine which 5 poets will have a chance to become the next Vancouver Poetry Slam Team.

It's crucial to understand the points system. This is the third year that we're using it.

You can read about how it works for qualifying for Team Playoffs here:

And about how it works for qualifying for WOWPS Playoffs here:

The points system should become clear very quickly as the season progresses and we start posting results. With that in mind, here are the results from the first qualifying slam.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

Thanks for this update, Duncan.

I let Julie Peters, our 2-time defending WOWPS champ, know that she needs to slam again if she wants to qualify for playoffs this year. She's definitely going for it again. Would have been there last night except she shot her voice. Expect her to show up in one of the last two qualifying slams: December 19th or January 2nd.

I notice that Duncan and DMP have slammed 5 times this year. Each poet can only slam 6 times with it counting toward qualifying for playoffs. However, it was clearly stated at the meeting when that rule was made that after participating in 6 slams (in one winter season), a poet can still slam with a few qualifications:

1. if there are still slots open in the slam (less than 12 poets who have slammed less than 6 times

2. their results will not count toward their point total after their first 6 performances

Anyway, that applies to almost no one and I'm not sure it ever will, but I thought I'd clarify.

Thank you for the clarification, Chris.  That's a really valuable thing to point out.  Good to hear Julie's going to go for it again.

Some people's names are down on the list twice of having slammed...Eric Rice, Lisa Slater and Spelt pop to mind.

I also like how Duncan and I have swapped 1st and 2nd the last two weeks by the slimmest of margins... point 1 last week and point 5 last night.

Thanks.  I noticed that happening with a couple of names but I thought I'd caught them all.  A lot of copying and pasting and alphabetizing late at night.  I'll sort that out.  Thanks.  Yeah, I like the way we traded off as well.
