Van Slam 2010-11 Regular Season: Standings & Scores
« on: September 22, 2010, 12:22:46 AM »
So! a new qualifying season is underway to determine which 5 poets will have a chance to become the next Vancouver Poetry Slam Team.

It's crucial to understand the points system. This is the second year that we're using it.  You can read about how it works here:
http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com/forum/smf/index.php/topic,792.msg2654.html

The points system should become clear very quickly as the season progresses and we start posting results. With that in mind, here are the results from the first qualifying slam.

After the poet's name is the order that they performed in the first round, then their first round score. After that is the position they performed in the second round (if they made the cut) and their second round score, followed by their total score for the evening.

In previous years, the WOW points were awarded for how many poets you beat, plus 1.  So if I come in last I get one point.  If I sacrifice I get one point.  If I come in second last I receive two points.

For a detailed explanation of past year's qualifying system for the WOWps Play-offs – which is entirely different than for the team qualifying! – please click over to:

http://vancouverpoetryhouse.com/forum/smf/index.php/topic,803.0.html[url]

I love this system because it rewards women who 1) do well, and 2) come out often.  The latter is the point of WOW; to encourage more women to perform their work!

According to my calculations it would look like this:

Theresa Quail - 6 points
Ria Parks - 5 points
Shannon Rayne 4 points

I see.  That sounds a little complicated but I get why it's done that way.  The math is daunting to me but I'll try to keep track of it.  Please keep an eye on my sums.

I don't know who would put a system like THAT in place..ahem...and that was the original system but I think it was different last year.

The first year we had WOW qualifying there were calls that we didn't have enough women participating in the slam so points were given out to women who competeted at the Van Slam AND the Main Street Slam.

Things seemed to have changed as far as the amount of excellent female poets we have...so I think the system has altered a bit.

But as per usual...check with you slammasters for the offical final say.

Well...Mr and Mrs Slammaster:  Please do not modify the WOW point system.  It encourages both excellence and new people from trying out.

Twas not different last year...and unless a ton of women in the community want it changed I'm happy with the status quo on this.

« Reply #9 on: November 06, 2010, 10:06:16 AM »
Duncan,

Your math for the regular standings looks good, but the WOW standings aren't right. According to my calculations, these are the standings. Let me know if these don't look right to you.

1. Ria Parks - 14 points
2. Lisa B - 11 points
3. Tessa Bourguignon - 9 points
4. Alkemy Roseblade - 8 points
4. Chelsea Johnson - 8 points
6. Lisa Slater - 7 points
7. Theresa Quail - 6 points
7. Jessica Mason-Paull - 6 points
9. Fortunate Sonya - 5 points
10. Gloria - 4 points
10. Shannon Rayne - 4 points

It's a bit confusing, just because for the regular standings, the number of points is based on how many people you beat in the second round. For the WOW standings, the number of points in based on how many people you beat in the whole slam, plus one. Easy to conflate them if you're doing both at the same time.

It's shaping up to be a great WOW slam...

Lisa

Oh my bad.  I thought it was how many women you beat in the whole slam for some reason, not just people.  Okay that makes more sense.  I knew this was going to confuse me.  Thanks for double checking my work.

Re: Van Slam 2010-11 Regular Season: Standings & Scores
« Reply #13 on: December 14, 2010, 01:20:57 AM »
So! a new qualifying season is underway to determine which 5 poets will have a chance to become the next Vancouver Poetry Slam Team.

13th December 2010

Sacrifice Poet
Julie Peters (1) 26.4 + (5) 27.8 = 54.2 Second! (9 points)
Ria Parks (2) 26.1 + (2) 27.8 = 53.9 Third! (4 points)
Steve Miller (3) 25.6 + (1) 25.2 = 50.8 Fifth!
Duncan Shields (4) 26.0 + (3) 27.5 = 53.5 Fourth! (1 point)
